General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is indicated as a method of treatment in a variety of situations:

  •  A younger child who has multiple cavities
  • A child or young adult who requires extractions
  •  An individual who has had an unpleasant past medical or dental experience
  •  The individual presents with a medical condition affecting their ability to participate safely
  •  The patient presents with a facial infection (swollen face)

The way we make it safe:

  • The team: Two doctors and three assistants with one patient.
  • IV:  Placed after the child is sedated and thus the child will not be scared by a needle.  The IV is then removed prior to the child waking up.
  •  Cameras: A camera is placed in the mouth to guide the tube without causing injury to the throat. An additional camera is utilized throughout the mouth to detect cavities and record treatment.   These pictures are presented to the family at the one week post-op appointment.
  •  Breathing: While asleep, the child will be breathing normally on his/her own.   A  tube is secured in the throat to prevent water and debris from getting into the lungs during the dental procedure. This is commonly compared to a snorkel, but while sleeping, instead of swimming.
  • Anesthesiologist: This highly trained doctor is present throughout the entire process, from sedation to waking up.
